Clay Aiken 第二届“美国偶像”的亚军 Clay Aiken全名Clayton Holmes Aiken，原姓Grissom，绰号Gonzo，于1978年11月30日出生在美国北卡罗莱纳州中东部的城市Raleigh的一个普通家庭，但是父母在他出生后不久就离婚了，此后的时间里，母亲Faye成为了Clay Aiken的精神支柱，也成了他最为尊敬和崇拜的人，他的姓Aiken就是1999年改掉父姓，并改随母亲的本姓。家庭的动荡持续了一段时间之后，渐渐稳定了下来，家庭成员也出现了变化，出了母亲以外还有父亲Ray(已经于2002年夏天去世)，以及一个大他11岁的哥哥Jeff和一个大他6岁的姐姐Amy，在他7岁那年，母亲和继父又为他增添了一个小弟弟Brett Parker。 在Leesville Road中学上初中和高中的时候，Clay Aiken还曾经每天一个小时的兼职教育小学学生体育，中学的时候还是学校广播电台的新闻小记者，所以他的理想并不是成为一名音乐家，而是希望能够成为一名记者，或者政治家，或者教师。但是Clay Aiken自幼就非常喜欢唱歌，并且曾在唱诗班得到锻炼，并且在Leesville Road中学一直坚持唱歌，从高中开始他的歌唱水平逐步得到肯定。平常，业余时间的Clay Aiken和大多数同龄人的生活差不多，除了睡觉以外就是和朋友一起吃饭，听音乐，看电影，以及和家人在一起，然而这一切在2003年发生了翻天覆地的变化。 当Clay Aiken的大学生活仅仅过了一个学期的时候，他选择了退学，原因是他要全力竞争一项比赛，美国娱乐圈的大佬Simon Fuller打造的“American Idol”大赛，Kelly Clarkson和Justin Guarini分别是第一届的冠亚军，如今他们都已经成为了美国观众眼中的偶像明星和媒体聚光灯下的宠儿。从2002年开始，激烈的竞争就已经展开，想要成为胜利者需要拥有非常出色的才艺和形象，经过严格的层层筛选，每轮比赛得到观众投票最多的选手可以晋级，经过了选拔之后，只有两个人能够进入决赛。Clay Aiken过关斩将，一路凯歌，凭借着自己的实力杀进了最终的决赛，另一个进入决赛的选手是Ruben Studdard。在2003年5月21日的决赛上，共有两千四百万名观众投票参加冠军评选，Clay Aiken最终以非常微弱的劣势惜败给了Ruben Studdard，而成为了大赛亚军，但是这同样让他获得了和著名的RCA唱片公司签约的机会。 《A Thousand Different Ways》整张专辑绝大部份以情歌为主，Clay Aiken其独特的歌声和曲风引起了各大唱片公司的关注，在Lonely No More单曲连续八周冠军之后，唱片超过了百万张记录，在这张专辑中Clay Aiken的个人造诣对音乐的理解已经十分成熟，那种忧伤、美丽、平静的质感令人情绪回转，犹如一股清新的风一般温馨朴面，Clay Aiken的歌声，唱着浮泛的伤情，唱着心底的汹涌，唱着深处的寂寞-------而这些，其实都会走向另一个自由的开始。
