APPLYING THERMAL COMPOUND TO CPU?
Recently my laptop has been getting very very hot and has caused a massive decrease in performance. After taking a look inside it seems that the thermal pads that was on the CPU have actually melted, so this needs to be replaced. I have purchased some artic silver and need to know the basics on how to get the best performance from the processor using the artic silver. - How do I go about cleaning the single core processor in the laptop? - How should I apply the arctic silver thermal compound to the processor? - Will the poor thermal pad be the main problem that is causing my laptop to get so hot? WILL THERMAL GREASE HELP ME USE MY NEW CPU?
Hello i recently recieved a pentium 4 3.2ghz cpu however, when I turn on the computer, only the cpu fan turns on, not the HDD. I beleive it has to do with the way the heat sink fits into the processor, as its used to being with a pentium 4 2.53ghz cpu. So my question is, will thermal grease help keep the heat connection between cpu and heatsink and, in turn, let me make use of my new cpu?

SHOULD YOU CHANGE THE THERMAL PASTE ON YOUR CPU/HEAT-SINK EVERY SO OFTEN?

HOW CAN I REMOVE A CPU FROM A HEAT-SINK? THE THERMAL PASTE SEEMS TO HAVE FUSED THEM TOGETHER. HELP!!!?
I am trying to separate a CPU from a heat-sink so I can put it on another motherboard (and use another heat-sink).. This WAS in my computer for about 1 1/2 years and the silicon based thermal compound I used as pretty much fused the two pieces together... I tired all the usual methods to separate them without any luck, I tried a knife blade between the two to pry it off, it didn't work. I tried a screwdriver in between the two and I managed to bend the heat-sink but didn't budge the CPU at all... I tried putting the whole contraption in the freezer for a few hours, thinking maybe that would make the thermal compound more brittle and would be easier to pop the CPU off, but it didn't seem to make a difference... Any suggestions!? I am at the end of what I know how to do :) Thanks for any suggestions... :) Perhaps I should have added that the heat-sink/CPU are now SEPARATED from the motherboard. So I can't turn any computer on with them in it, I can't see all the pins so I can't get the CPU onto any motherboard (part of why I want to separate them so I CAN put it on another MB)... So although I appreciate this suggestion, it's not going to help me now :) OK, first thanks for the input - but I guess either I didn't describe everything properly or people aren't reading what I am writing... The cpu/heatsink is still connected to each other. HOWEVER it is NOT connected to the motherboard anymore. Again, the motherboard isn't in the picture anymore. All we have is a heatsink/cpu issue here. It's a AM2 chipset FYI. The problem is removing the CPU FROM the heatsink, nothing else. I was the one who put this together about 1 1/2 years ago. I used a silicon based thermal paste (arctic brand thermal paste). I did not mistakenly use something else, I know that because I have the tube still with some still in it... :) I will try the blow dryer method tomorrow, hopefully it works - but please keep posting..

CPU WAS SHUTDOWN DUE TO THERMAL EVENT (OVERHEATING)?
Hi, My computer has gone shutdown after few minutes of starting and screen shows "cpu was shutdown due to thermal event (overheating)". do you know the exact problem? but i recently changed fan and smps. they are again testing and responding there are some problem with processor.
