Indoor pool considered for Hillside
This fall the Bismarck and Century swimming and diving teams will have to practice at the same time at the only indoor pool in Bismarck....at the YMCA. Potentially there could be 10 to 12 swimmers in ONE lane, plus the divers on ONE board. That's just one of the reasons why some people are saying Bismarck needs an indoor pool. Dennis Kemmesat, a huge supporter of City Measure number 1, a measure pushing for a new pool among other things that was defeated in the last election, is at again. His group, Streamline Development wants to build an indoor pool on the site of the current Hillside pool, that was built in the early 50's. But this time, there's a big difference on how the money would be raised. Instead of taxing the community, the group would fund raise the 6 million dollar price tag through grants and donations, and then eventually lease the pool to the Bismarck Parks and Recreation District. Dennis: We're talking about taking what's now a potentially a sixty to eighty day at best use facility and turning it into a 365 day use facility that would accomadate not only you know swim teams and things like that in the community but also recreational swimmers lesson programs and a number of other things that they could build around to make it into a real useful facility. Streamline development has already contacted local contractors and if this idea becomes a reality, demolition of the current Hillside pool would begin August 1st and the new indoor pool would be open in August of 2008. Anyone interested in seeing drawings of the proposed indoor pool or anyone that has other ideas to build a new indoor pool in Bismarck can do so this Thursday from 6 to 8 pm at the High Plains Arts and Science Center just north of BSC.
