CAN MY FRIEND DO TEMP JOBS IN GRAD SCHOOL?
I have a friend who is going to university to study history and will be graduating in May. She was looking into the graduate schools to study history and she has looked at several. The school she is at now does not offer a public history based program which is what she wants to do. I think there were two schools that offered the public history program. She thought the other schools were nice but they offer mainly history for post education teaching. Most of the schools that she looked into were no more than an hour to two and a half hours away. She has a job off campus and has had it for the last three years. She transfered from another school before where she had a different major and off campus job.She sees one problem with this. The one school she would like to go to that has the graduate public history program is about two hours away. She has been looking into the jobs for graduates on and off campus till recently and she knows that they tend to hire more people in the fall sometimes. She went to visit the schools to see about the programs, activities, and to look around the town. She has turned in the resumes and she is waiting for them to call. However she is concerned what would happen if she does not get a job on or off campus in the time that the school term starts in August. I am sure she will but she is looking into getting an apartment off campus or maybe a graduate dorm. She is concerned that she may have to wait until just after school starts a few months to secure a position. She told me that she would have to work in the town she is at for three days and she has been doing some school and on the three days she has classes she would or might have to do something such as stay at a hotel. Or maybe there is some living arrangement she could work out. The other school that has the public history program is about an hour from where she is at so it is not bad or might be more ideal. She is concerned that they would not give her an apartment worse case scenario. The schools she is looking at do offer many temp positions for students ranging from a semester to one week or twoo weeks or up to four for both undergrad to grad. She hopes to gain an on or off campus position soon but she was thinking if maybe she could start off with a temp job or two. Or do you think not? Sorry about typos. I meant to say that she has been outside school extracurricular activities. She is in four or five school organizations at the moment.
