UM Hospitals to lay off 80 workers

http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com.com About 80 people will lose their jobs early next year at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, administrators have announced. The layoffs will affect one half of one percent of the hospital system's 12,500 employees. CEO Doug Strong said the layoffs are necessary despite efforts to meet budget goals through attrition, a hiring freeze and reductions in overtime and temporary positions. Strong said he can't rule out further layoffs, but hospital administrators hope they won't be necessary. He would not identify which departments will be effected by the layoffs, but said they are "almost all" positions that wouldn't be involved directly with patient care. The employees who are losing their jobs will be told in early December. The earliest layoffs will be effective at the end of January.
