He opened a school and named it 'Kindergarten.' or 'Children's Garden.' Q. Why were infant schools needed in Europe? (a) Because there were too many teachers with no jobs. (b) Because many young mothers worked in factories. (c) Because industry needed more workers. (d) Because children needed early education 56. His paintings are celebrated all over the world, yet only 30 or so are known to have survived. He lived so quiet an existence, and so short, dying at 43, that we know very little about him. Johannes Vermeer, better known as jan, lived all his life in the provincial Dutch city of Delft. He was married and fathered 15 children, 11 of whom survived infancy. One can imagine the noise of his crowded house with all those children running about, And yet his paintings have left us a legacy of cool serenity, of calm, of quiet little moments. Q. Which of the following statements about Johannes Vermeer is true? (a) He died at the age of 30. (b) He is only known in about 30 countries. (c) Eleven of his children died as infants. (d) His paintings have a calm, quiet quality. 57. Hi, Laura. This is Ann. It's 5 :30 in the afternoon and I just got in town, The bus that started from Louisville arrived just on time here in Aspen. The bus trip took five hours but the scenery along the way was just fantastic. I'm making a call from the bus depot to make sure that we're supposed to meet at Snowhill Lodge at six this evening. You are not home right now so I guess you have already left. See you soon at Snowhill. Q. Which of the following is Not correct? (a) Ann is talking to an answering machine. (b) Ann is suppose to meet Laura in about 30 minutes. (c) Ann's bus left Louisville at 12:30. (d) Ann called Laura to make an appointment. 58. Can you imagine gardens that never need watering? The early Aztec people built just gardens. Guided by a religious sign, the Aztecs settled on a small island in the middle of a lake. To survive, they wove reed mats, covering them with soil, and planted seeds in the soil. They placed these sprouting mats on the lake to create floating gardens which had a continuous supply of water. Q. According to the passage, which of the following is true? (a) The early Aztecs could not have gardens because there was no land. (b) The early Aztecs were so busy that they couldn't water their gardens. (c) The Aztec people did not believe in any religious sign. (d) The Aztec gardens made of reed mats could soak up water from the lake. 59. Drugs are substances that have been used for thousands of years for the cure or prevention of disease, to alleviate pain or for pleasure. The major sources for drugs in ancient times were plants, minerals, or animals. In ancient China, opium was used as a treatment for various health problems. In India, Indian hemp was used as a pain reliever. Both marijuana and alcohol were also well known in ancient time, and a brewery was producing alcohol in Egypt about 5.000 years ago. Q. Which best summarizes the main idea of the passage? (a) Drugs are a relatively modern invention. (b) Ancient Egyptians suffered greatly from alcoholism. (c) The use of plants, minerals and animals for drugs is dangerous. (d) Ancient societies also knew how to make drugs and used them to treat sickness. 60. English grammar is simpler than that of other major languages. However, English spelling is difficult, especially for nonnative speakers of English. The major reason is that Modern English spelling represents old English pronunciation. The English we use today is written almost the same as it was hundreds of year ago, but the way people pronounce the words has changed a lot. Therefore, many words in English are not pronounced the way they are spelled. Q. According to this talk, why is English spelling difficult? (a) Because English still uses Old English words. (b) Because the letters are harder to memorize. (c) Because the words are not pronounced as they are spelled. (d) Because English grammar tends to change every decade or so. Song Used-Now Or Never by High School Musical 3 Janice: Because he's the guy who bullied me! JM: Well, you don't need to be mean. Janice:(stands up) Let's just go. They walk to the car and get in. She starts driving while Janice stares out the window, wondering how sweet her life will be by tomorrow. They walk out of the car and walk inside. Janice walks straight upstairs and lays on hr bed and starts staring at the ceiling. She thinks about who the guy was in her dream. He looked cute to her, but she didn't know who he was. She gets up and walks to the bathroom. She grabs the make up and starts putting him on. By the time she's done, she looks beautiful! She smiles at her self in the mirror and wonders if the boys will be all over her in Atlanta. She takes off the make up and starts watching tv. By the time at 10:00pm, Janice and her mom are in a deep sleep...) (Janice's dream) Janice:(leans in) Nick:(leans in but stops) Wait, do I know you? Janice: Uh, yes? Nick: Good! (kisses her) Janice:(pulls away and blushes) I love you. Nick: I.... JM: Janice! Wake up! WE're moving? Janice: Mom! You ruined my perfect dream! JM: Sorry honey! Janice:(gets out of bed and gets dressed and runs downstairs) Ready! JM: Ok. (smiles) Come on! (They get on the moving bus with all of their stuff in the back. The driver starts driving toward Atlanta. 4 hours pass by and their there. They get out of the truck and un pack everything. But the time their done. It's 12:00pm.) JM: You can go to your new school! Janice: But It will count as late though. JM: It's ok. Just get an excuse. Janice: Ok. (grabs her new bookbag) Bye mom. (walks to school and sees some guy) ???:(sees her and walks up to her) Hi. I'm Nick. Janice: I'm Janice. Nick: Your new here? Janice:(looks up at him and sees who he is and mumbles) Oh My gosh. Um... yeah I am. Nick: Cool.
