~Below is the text-excerpt~ Hello and welcome to our first online podcast session. From today till next month we will be posting new facts and ideas on our blog as podcasts. You can listen to them at home, at work, or on-the-go on your iPods or mp3 players. Or you can watch them with text-excerpts on our blog. As you all know, this blog, called GeoSavers, is all about saving and helping the environment. The environment includes air, water, land, and much more. Our theme for this month is water and problems or pollution relating to aquatic life. Did you know that water is everywhere on this planet? Earth has about 326 million trillion gallons of water on it. 98 percent of this water is the ocean and the other 2 percent is available to us as fresh water. Did you also know that the human body is made up of about 65 percent of water. That means that if you weigh 100 pounds, 65 pounds is water. But, do you know what happens when you dont use this water properly. If you guessed pollution, youre absolutely right! Water pollution is when external factors, like humans, take advantage of water and misuse it. Other causes of water pollution include sewage and water waste, marine dumping, industrial waste, radioactive waste, oil pollution, underground storage leakages, atmospheric deposition, eutrophication, and global warming. But, what happens if we dont prevent this? Do you know what the dangers are of polluted water? Well, polluted water in lakes and rivers can be toxic to marine animals, like fish and shellfish, and to humans that eat them. Water pollution in sewages can lead to infectious diseases, like typhoid fever. Water pollution to fresh water can affect the quality of the every-day water that you drink. So do you know what you can do to help prevent water pollution? First, you can conserve water by turning off the tap when running water is not necessary. This helps prevent water shortages and reduces the amount of contaminated water that needs treatment. Second, be careful about what you throw down your sink or toilet. Don't throw paints, oils or other forms of litter down the drain. Third, use environmentally friendly household products, such as washing powder, household cleaning agents and toiletries. Fourth, take great care not to overuse pesticides and fertilizers. This will prevent runoffs of the material into nearby water sources. Fifth, by having more plants in your garden you are preventing fertilizer, pesticides and contaminated water from running off into nearby water sources. And lastly, don't throw litter into rivers, lakes or oceans. Help clean up any litter you see on beaches or in rivers and lakes, make sure it is safe to collect the litter and put it in a nearby dustbin. Now you know what water pollution is, what causes it, and how you can prevent it. So, now you can take a step to try to follows some of the simple rules to help save the environment. As Neil Armstrong once said, This is one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind. Go Green!!
