Luxury yacht The term luxury yacht refers to a very expensive privately owned yacht which is professionally crewed. Also known as a super-yacht, a luxury yacht may be either a sailing or motor yacht. Yachts from 23 metres (75 feet) and up qualify for design awards from the Superyacht Society, but at the bottom end of that scale yachts will not necessarily be crewed and many set the minimum length for a superyacht considerably higher. From around 30 metres (98 feet) and up yachts are almost always crewed. A 45 to 50 metres (148 to 164 feet) yacht, the smallest with a generally accepted claim to superyacht status, will usually be a three decker with cabins for 12 guests (that is a preferred number, more common than either 10 or 14, and is found on yachts across quite a wide size range), and for a crew of a similar size. The accommodation on this type of yacht is typically as follows: Lower deck: exterior swimming platform at the stern; four (sometimes five) guest cabins with en-suite bath or shower rooms aft; engine room amidships; crew quarters forward. Main deck: sheltered exterior deck aft leading into the salon; dining room and galley; entrance amidships; owner's suite forward, usually includes either a study or a second twin stateroom. Cosmos is still considered one of Australia's most luxurious and recognizable private vessels . The first year of operation ( 1987 ) was generally trouble free , with only two incidents taking place soon after delivery. The first problem was the entire control link to the engines was lost at a critical time of docking . It had us all very concerned as the 120 tonne Cosmos drifted precariously towards other smaller boats moored in the Southport Yacht club. Fortunately control was regained with only moments to go before crushing an entire section of the marina . The other small incident was a cable for the ski boat davit was too small and broke , resulting in near disaster . The cable did actually snap with the ski boat on it , but lucky for us , the 1 tone runabout was only 2 metre from the water at the time. If it had been halfway over the second level (15 feet up ) , it could have caused alot of damage. So apart from nearly wiping out a marina , or killing someone with a falling speedboat , NO PROBLEMS Operating helicopters on and off the back of Cosmos always reminded me of something straight out of a James Bond movie . I cannot explain how exciting it was to be anchored on the Great barrier reef and then someone suddenly says , lets go and explore the islands by air . Once we landed on a remote tropical island with no inhabitants and hiked up into a beautiful rain forest complete with an unforgettable waterfall. The little Robinson R22 was perfectly suited and specifically purchased for Cosmos as it could float on water . Registration number COS The flight deck had enough support for larger helicopters up to 3 tonnes ( eg. a Bell Longranger or the heavy Aerospatiale AS-355 Twin Ecureuil ) Having featured in movies and lifestyle shows , it was the first boat of its size to have a fully operational private Helipad .
