Buoyant market for luxury yachts
The world economy may be slowing down. But the luxury yacht business is as buoyant as ever. The big boats are out in force in London's Earl's Court and according to Pearl dealer Peter Piponides, they are getting bigger. SOUNDBITE Pearl dealer Peter Piponides: "We now have got a lot of clients, repeat clients who are looking to buy a new 75ft yacht which we should have ready in the next 14-16 months time and I think the trend is much larger yachts as well- it's a different league altogether." And by larger yachts we are talking around 800,000 GB pounds. But there are buyers - and Michael Newton-Woof representing Riva says his clients come from all over the world. SOUNDBITE: Michael Newton-Woof, RIVA "We have a lot of interest from British-based clients. Whether they are British nationals domiciled here or just residents from the UAE of countries, Russia or mainland Europe. There is a huge spread nowadays of british residents who are buying boats who are not necessarily British citizens." British boatmaker Trader has been around for 40 years and Anthony Chappell says that although rising oil prices aren't a major concern to buyers, people are changing their attitudes to fuel.
